GULF STATE PARK CABINS & PAVILION
Gulf Shores, Alabama

Gulf State Park lies on Pleasure Island off the mainland of Alabama. A unique ecosystem of fresh water springs creates a linear collection of large freshwater lakes, the largest of which is Lake Shelby, all running down the length of this long, narrow barrier island. The area has been ravaged by several hurricanes over the years, and after Hurricanes Ivan in 2004 and Katrina in 2005, the state was ready to build back better. The 11 new, resilient cabins hug the north edge of Lake Shelby, replacing 11 former cabins. They are structured to withstand a direct hit by a category four hurricane, and their stilts lift the living areas high to avoid inevitable future hurricane flood waters. They have large windows to let in the sunlight and screened porches for additional outdoor living area. The interior furnishings in bright yellows and cool blues echo the bright sun, soft sand, and refreshing waters of the lake and Gulf. The project vision was to make cabins accessible to the citizens of Alabama – cabins that feel luxurious and personal, as if you are staying at the lake- or oceanfront cabin of a friend. The beach pavilion stands on the location of a former beach access structure, alone on an otherwise empty two mile stretch of untouched ancient dune beach ecosystem. The sculptural roof sweeps upward to the Gulf views and winds, open on all sides to allow the breeze to pass through. It lets the winter light penetrate for warmth, and creates shade in the summer months. The wood and stone structure provides shelter for community events, family gatherings, and sunrise services, with two function spaces separated by the large fireplace. Restrooms, showers, and concessions are positioned so as not to impact the view from the terrace. Wood screens provide privacy to the pavilion spaces from the adjacent coastal highway while allowing the natural breezes to filter through, and an enormous double-sided fireplace enhances events and provides warmth on cool evenings.
