For the Inn on Biltmore Estate, each step of the design process was an amazing opportunity met with passion. The design team worked through details large and small, from participating in the hotel site selection to incorporating the one grand black walnut tree, that had to be removed for construction, into the millwork of the private dining room. The owners of the Biltmore Estate, the Cecils, wanted to create a luxury hotel to give guests the opportunity to actually stay on and enjoy the extensive amenity offerings of the 8,000 acre estate, the first such opportunity since George Vanderbilt entertained guests in the early 1900s. The site planning thoughtfully relates the hotel planning to the Frederick Law Olmsted landscape, and the massing and position of the hotel minimize its perception from the historic Richard Morris Hunt house. In reverse, every guest arriving at the Inn gets a framed view of the historic home from the hotel lobby, across two miles of countryside. The social lobby projects into a semi-circular volume and provides a unique vista in the eastern United States – a sweeping 270-degree view, unblemished by any man-made structures, and looking across multiple ridges of the Blue Ridge Mountains. A grand stone veranda for cocktails and dining opens to views of the beautiful French Broad River and the long mountain vistas. The desire to connect guests to the estate landscape experience continues with an outdoor event belvedere off the social ballroom and special event terraces for weddings. Each room even has the ability to open its windows to invite in the crisp Blue Ridge Mountain air.
